WATERLOO ? Mt. Pleasant?s Ethan Weber was in Waterloo with some of the best tennis players in Iowa on Friday for the start of the Class 1A state singles tournament.
Weber went 1-2 in his state tournament run. He fell 6-0 and 7-5 in his opening round matchup with fourth-seeded Reed Miller of Council Bluffs St. Albert. Weber was then placed in the consolation bracket against Kade Carpenter of Spencer.
Against Spencer, Weber came back from losing the first set 6-3 to even up the series with a 6-1 victory. An injury forced Spencer to forfeit the last set and Weber advanced on to the next round.
In his second consolation match, Weber took on Jack Lucy of Dubuque Wahlert. Lucy knocked Weber off 6-1 and 6-1, keeping him out of the top eight placewinners.
Lucy went on to win the consolation side of the bracket to finish fifth. He took down Fairfield Maharishi?s Daniel Zhu along the way. Weber and Zhu were the two qualifiers from the Fairfield regional, which took place earlier this month.
