DES MOINES ? The area?s top track and field athletes are just days away from the 2018 Drake Relays in Des Moines. A pack of Panthers lead the list of qualifiers with New London?s Carson McSorley representing the county?s small schools.
The first day of action for the Henry County qualifiers will be Friday, April 27. Mt. Pleasant?s Lexie Magnani will be throwing the shot put, which starts at 8:30 a.m., and Keegan Rich will be in the long jump at 9:30 a.m. Magnani has the 15th-best distance in the shot put, throwing a 39-09.50 earlier this year. Rich?s best leap, 21-09.75, is seeded 13th in the long jump.
The Panther trio of Jake Lowe, Cole Burns and Chase Lamm will be competing in the 110-meter high hurdle preliminaries, which begin at 10:36 a.m. Lowe has the state?s fourth-best time at 14.62 seconds, and Burns has an outside shot at the Finals as well, seeded 13th with a time of 14.98 seconds.
The Panther 4x100 Teams will begin action on Friday evening, starting at 5:33 p.m. The Panther boys? squad features Rich, Rylan Seberg, Khang Truong and William Copeland, while the girls? team features Dani Broeker, Kalynn Batey, Lyndi Vantiger and Avery Sutter.
The state-leading boys? shuttle hurdle team of Rich, Lamm, Burns and Lowe will run in the prelims on Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m. Their top time of 56.49 seconds is the top mark in the state by over two seconds.
McSorley will represent New London in the 400-meter hurdles, and she will be joined by Mt. Pleasant?s Maggie Cristoforo on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. McSorley has the state?s ninth-best time at 1:06.33, while Cristoforo sits in 18th with a time of 1:07.78.
