Mt. Pleasant senior Dani Broeker signed her letter of intent on Monday to attend Loras College in Dubuque, where she will play volleyball.
Broeker, who played libero for Mt. Pleasant during her senior year, led the team with 254 digs and was one of the top servers as well, finishing the year with 19 aces.
She will be playing defensive specialist for Loras, a school which finished 12-15 overall and 3-5 in conference play in 2017. Broeker says a family connection helped her discover Loras. Two of her cousins play sports for the Duhawks.
?I didn?t really hear about it until it kind of came into the family,? Broeker says. ?They always said I should check it out, and one day we met the volleyball coach randomly. She was interested, said ?as soon as your old enough, come check it out,? and kept in contact with me.?
Broeker?s high school coach, David Streeter, says Broeker?s attitude is what stood out to him during his three years as her head coach.
?Her attitude, her improvement over the years (sticks out),? Streeter said. ?I wish I could have coached her for a few more years. Her determination and work ethic is almost incomparable.?
Broeker will be studying elementary education at Loras and she plans on being an elementary teacher. She joked that she is likely to teach the younger ages due to her small stature.
?My thoughts are probably nothing above third, because then they will most likely be taller than me and I will have no power,? said Broeker.
Broeker says staying in Iowa played a factor in her decision, wanting to be close to home. The Duhawks play Iowa Wesleyan and are even scheduled to play them in Mt. Pleasant next season.
When asked about her favorite high school volleyball memories, Broeker says she?ll miss the good times with her teammates, even the ones that may have been a little bit painful.
?We had quite a few facials last year in volleyball,? recalled Broeker. ?Anni (Liechty) got one in our last game and that was pretty funny. We just always had a good team atmosphere and it was always fun with the girls.?
Broeker signed her letter alongside her family and friends at the Mt. Pleasant High School media center.
