Back to school: Winfield-Mt. Union school news

It?s the beginning of August, which means it?s time to start getting geared up for another great school year. There?s always an element of change from one school year to the next whether it be updates to facilities, equipment, new staff, new programs, etc. This coming year is no exception.

Facility updates include remodeled bathrooms in the elementary, more modern furniture and carpeting in some classrooms, plumbing updates in locker rooms and a new entrance to the football/track complex.

It?s also exciting to announce that all K-12 students will have access to either an iPad (K-2), or a laptop in grades 3-12. This is to enhance efforts to make our school district a leader for increasing technology literacy as well as enhancing quality teaching and learning. Special emphasis will be given to training of teachers on effective ways to use the equipment in their lessons, as well as instructing students on being responsible users.

We are looking forward to welcoming several new staff members this year, and believe we?ve hired some very talented, quality people to become part of an already great staff. There are also some current staff members who will be taking on new and important roles. We?re excited to see the many contributions they will all make to our school community.

For the first time, W-MU is offering a free breakfast program to all PK-12 students. That?s right, all students are able to eat breakfast for free beginning Thursday, Aug. 23. Serving will be from 7:30-8 a.m. daily. Our kitchen staff is gearing up for the start of the year and are looking forward to providing this to all students. Once again, it?s free so there?s no excuse for a child to learn on an empty stomach at W-MU beginning this school year.

Our four-year old preschool program has grown to the point where two sections are needed and will now be offered four times per week for half days with a morning and afternoon section. This will allow us to continue to offer a three-year-old program as well to better serve the needs of our community.

Another change this fall, is we?ll be playing in an eight-man football district for the first time. Our kids and coaches are excited for this opportunity, and hopefully will experience some success and ability to be more competitive. The first game will be a JV/Varsity doubleheader on Aug. 17, in Springville. Our junior high team also will be playing eight-man football.

Of course, the other fall sports and activity season will bring numerous opportunities for our students to be involved and for the rest of the community to come support them. There are also opportunities to volunteer in support of our students and school programs. Two examples are the Big Red Pride boosters who run the concession stands and the recently formed PTO. Both groups are always looking for people to help out and the adage ?many hands make light work? is certainly true for these organizations that do so much for our school.

Finally, some important dates to remember include:

Aug. 3-5 Crooked Creek Days

Aug. 6 Official start of HS volleyball and cross-country practice (physicals/concussion forms)
